PURPOSE: CERT TO HIRE LIFEGUARD POSITION. SEASONAL, FLEX.
Once certified, lifeguards perform all pool an/or waterfront lifeguard responsibilities (including but not limited to: supervising swimmer/ patrons and their activities, monitoring all natural water activities, applying first aid, enforcing safety rules, reporting safety hazards to supervisors, performing water rescues as necessary, etc.)

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Qualified applicants are required to pass education/ training to be certified as a Lifeguard. Applicant will not be assigned to the Lifeguard position until certification is obtained. Once certified the following duties are included in the Seasonal Cert to Hire Lifeguard position:
  • Observes conditions of area assigned (e.g., possible hazards, water/chemical conditions, wind and weather, etc), to ensure a safe environment, removing hazardous materials when necessary (e.g.) floating debris, glass, etc.).
  • Performs rescue work, promptly renders CPR or emergency first aid, and calls for medical assistance as necessary.
  • Conducts and documents pool chemical testing results.
  • Checks chlorine and pH level on a scheduled basis; notifies Certified Pool Operator or supervisor of chemical imbalances; adjusts chemicals as directed.
  • Administers aquatic assessment testing and certification in accordance with Department of Defense (DOD), Department of the Navy (DON) and CNIC policy.
  • Provides introductory equipment orientations, as needed.
  • Checks identification cards for authorized patrons and collects usage fees, if applicable.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the activity, security, medical departments, and Aquatics Coordinator during emergency situations.
  • Performs cleaning duties (e.g., basic janitorial services, vacuuming, skimming, etc,) and routine facility maintenance as assigned by Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Inspects stands, boards, ropes, safety gear and conditions of the dressing rooms, ensuring they are within the condition required by environmental health standards.
  • Informs supervisor of deficiencies.
  • Uses and maintains care of emergency equipment (e.g., specialized kits and bags, backboards, suction devices, splints, stretchers, monitoring equipment, etc.).
  • Enforces applicable policies and procedures of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) regarding the use of Aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
  • Prepares accident/incident reports during emergency situations. Notifies management of all emergencies immediately.
  • Works with hazardous materials (e.g., cleaning agents, pool chemicals, etc.).

REQUIREMENTS:  CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Candidates must pass the swim pre-qualification test. 100m swim, 2 minutes treading water legs only, 50 sec brick retrieval.
  • Must pass initial interview process and complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard course during certification process.
  • Must sign a letter of commitment stating they will remain employed at the Gulfport location for 2 consecutive summer seasons (April- October for 2023 and 2024) or will be responsible for reimbursement of the $100 cost of training and certification.
  • Must have flexible availability to work during operating hours, which are Sun- Sat from 6am- 6pm, up to 29 hours per week.
  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • 5 APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO CONDUCT EACH COURSE. (Max of 10 for each date, with two course dates scheduled. See Qualification and Education section for the dates scheduled.)

QUALIFICATIONS

CERTIFICATION TO HIRE- SEASONAL LIFEGUARD.
This program provides the training and education needed to obtain Lifeguard certification. This listing is for applicants who need their certification.

  • Position begins at $15.00 per hour as a NF 01 until training courses are completed. Courses must be completed, and certification obtained to serve as a Lifeguard. Once you have become a certified Lifeguard, and have completed 6 months of successful work experience with us, you will be promoted to NF02 @ $16.00 per hour.
  • Must sign commitment letter for 2 consecutive seasons of employment totaling 12 months. (April - October for 2023 and 2024.) If candidate is unable to complete the 12 month commitment, they will be required to reimburse the program $100.00 for the cost of training and education that was provided by the MWR for Lifeguard certification.
  • Must complete American Red Cross Lifeguard course
  • Must have flexible hours Sun to Saturday, 6am to 7pm. 0-39 hours per week.
  • Candidate must pass the swim pre-qualification test:( 100M swim, 2 minutes of treading water legs only, 50 sec brick retrieval.)
  • Must pass initial interview process, to proceed to the educational/training portion.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the ability to learn the following:

  • Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules.
  • Knowledge of the beach environment, marine life, and beach and water hazards. (Waterfront Only)
  • Knowledge of DoD, DON and CNIC policies and procedures governing aquatic assessment testing and certifications.
  • Knowledge of applicable policies and procedures of MWR regarding the use of Aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
  • Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
  • Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazardous situations and identify a patron's need for assistance immediately.
  • Ability to tactfully, but forcefully, provide instruction on water safety, facility rules and regulations, and enforce them.
  • Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area to ensure they me et environmental health standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct pool chemical testing, document the results, and adjust chemical imbalances, as directed.
  • Skilled or proficient in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communications to perform a safe and efficient rescue operation.
  • Ability to exercise control over a large group of people.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education
