LOCATION:  Fitness Center / Aquatics, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Mississippi.

Overview

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring patron eligibility, the efficient handling of cash, ensuring water safety and the efficient supervision and safe operation of the Fitness Center Pool.

 

Responsibilities

Plans, develops and maintains a military aquatics and recreational program for a large community of active duty military, dependents, retirees and authorized civilians.  Plan, coordinate and schedule recurring activities, special events and joint community undertakings to maximize use of facilities and resources consistent with the military mission.  Evaluates effectiveness of ongoing aquatic activities.  Adapts and varies programs as necessary.  Enforces rigid safety regulations to ensure maximum protection of swimmers.  Continuously observes swimming area to ensure the safety of patrons. Enforces safety and sanitary regulations.  Rescues swimmer in trouble and promptly administers first aid as needed.  Plans swimming programs, developing basic categories such as swim instructions, swim team competition, water exercise classes, etc., and may involve SCUBA instruction.  Devises, improvises and adapts various activities to fit the conditions of water environment and to conform to limitations in funds, facilities and equipment and staff support.  May assist supervisor in developing annual budget, procurement of equipment, formulating long-range plans, safety programs and public relations undertakings.  Directs the activities of and provides technical supervision to an average of 8 Lifeguards.  Responsible for instructing and teaching various swimming skills, styles to various age groups.  Ensures all water safety rules are observed by swimmers, utilizing a good knowledge of all aspects of water safety.  Observes swimmers and ensures all participants are accounted for at all times.  Prepares materials for presentation and explaining.  When necessary, renders emergency first aid until qualified medical assistance arrives.  Maintains cleanliness of pool, pool decks, showers, toilet facilities, and locker rooms.  Periodically checks for chlorine and alkaline content. Checks water temperature daily.  Alerts supervisor as to problems with pool equipment or chemical levels.  Coordinates with Public Works Department to ensure the proper maintenance of pumps, chlorine system and filters. Performs water tests.  Conducts a training program for the qualification of Lifeguards.  Maintains proper records of all accidents and incidents that occur at the CBC Fitness Pool.

Qualifications

Two years of experience that demonstrates knowledge of: water safety on an instructor level;  cardiopulmonary resuscitation (preferably on an instructor level); basic and advance first aid and ability to independently develope and monitor a comprhensive aquatics program for a large community.  Must possess a current Lifeguard Training Card.  Must possess the ability to plan and direct the efforts of others.  Must be able to carry out verbal and written instructions and intelligently convey the same to others.  Ability to use equipment to take pool and environmental readings.  Must possess Water Safety Instructor (WSI), current Cardio-Pulminary Resuscitation (CPR), and basic first aid certificates.  Dexterity to handle a person in the water who may panic or be unconscious.  Understanding of and ability to enforce rigid safety regulations to ensure maximum protection of swimmers.
